Bessie Mae is the first of thirteen children born of Amos Cleveland Hampton and Ethelma Bailey of whom both have preceded her in death. She accepted Christ at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist church in Lexington, MS. 1943, at age of nine, she was baptized.

Bessie Mae attended, Lebanon Elementary School up until eight grade. She attended Saints Junior High School and College located in Lexington, MS where she graduated in 1954.
In 1960, Bessie Mae moved to Chicago, IL, she joined Monumental Baptist Church under Rev. Matthew Johnson under Christian experience. She faithfully served as a deaconess, on usher board and participated in the September Club. She enjoyed singing praises to her Heavenly Father in the choir and marching in.
During her employment at Lake City Laundry, she met C.I. McCurthy who has preceded her in death to this union in 1962, Anthony Charles was born. Bessie Mae later married John Henry Alexander to this union in1967 Ann Marita was born.
Bessie Mae worked at the University of Illinois Hospital for 35 years devotedly until retirement. In 1973, she married; Richard Edward Hampton who has preceded her in death to this union Mark Edward was born.
Bessie Mae leaves to mourn her children Anthony Charles (Joyce), Spring, TX, Ann Marita (Parrish), Madison, WI and Mark Edwards, Madison, WI. Four grandchildren, Starring, Jaquetta, Shaqouia, and Sarah. Seven great grandchildren, Sanjuan, Terrall, Jerrall, Star, Jaden, Valerie, and Carlos. Siblings, Essie Meddie (John), Pearl, MS, Sarah Jean, Atlanta, GA, Odessare, St Louis, MO, Leonard (Tammie), Lexington, MS, Geraldine, Pearl, MS, Mildred Delaine, Memphis, TN, Thelma Jeanette, St. Louis, MO, Ed Wilburn (Reena), San Jose, CA and Katherine Elizabeth, Jackson, MS. Three brothers have preceded her in death, Otha Douglas, Johnny Howard and Amos Cleveland. Host of nieces and nephews.
